Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Natural gas broke below $2.80 on a mild weather outlook, HRW and SRW wheat each fell more than 2% to lead a broad grains retreat, and gold and corn were the rare bright spots, both edging higher.

HRS wheat tested a downside level flagged in Friday's Klarenbach Grain Report.

The Read
🌽 Corn — 463.25¢, +1¼¢ (+0.27%) 🟢⬆️ $CORN ( ▲ 0.67% ) $ZC_F ( 0.0% )
The one grain that bucked today's slide. Steady end-user buying and thin farm selling gave corn a floor while the rest of the board leaned lower.
Harvest is still rolling hard across the Corn Belt, but demand absorbed it today instead of the other way around.
So what: a small green candle doesn't change the bin math much, but it's a welcome change of pace after a rough couple of weeks.
Watch: Thursday's export sales number for whether this demand strength has legs.
🫘 Soybeans — 1245.25¢, −3¢ (−0.24%) 🔴⬇️ $SOYB ( ▼ 0.38% ) $ZS_F ( 0.0% )
A quiet pullback. Harvest pressure outweighed a fresh round of Chinese demand, with China booking another cargo-sized purchase today.
The move was small enough that it reads more as the broader grain complex's drag than a bean-specific story.
So what: China still showing up to buy is the more important signal than today's modest dip.
Watch: the pace of South American planting and any further Chinese purchase announcements.
🥣 Soybean Meal — $348.30, −$0.40 (−0.11%) 🔴⬇️ $ZM_F ( 0.0% )
Meal barely budged today, the calmest leg of the soy complex after carrying most of the downside itself yesterday.
Livestock and protein-feed demand held steady, keeping the crush (the margin a processor earns turning beans into meal and oil) roughly where it was.
So what: feedlot rations aren't moving much either way off today's print.
Watch: the next crush report for whether processors keep leaning on meal or let oil do the work.
🫒 Soybean Oil — 65.97¢, −0.76¢ (−1.14%) 🔴⬇️ $ZL_F ( 0.0% )
Oil led the soy complex lower today, tracking a broad vegetable-oil selloff: Chicago soyoil, European rapeseed, and Malaysian palm oil were all in the red together.
Biofuel demand's tight leash to crude didn't help much on a day crude itself was choppy and ultimately softer.
So what: a weaker vegetable-oil complex is a headwind for biodiesel economics heading into year-end blending season.
Watch: palm oil's export data out of Malaysia and any EPA biofuel-policy headline.
🌾 SRW Wheat — 628.25¢, −15¢ (−2.33%) 🔴⬇️ $WEAT ( ▼ 1.95% )
One of the day's biggest grain movers. Winter wheat planting and emergence are running ahead of normal across the Midwest, and that pace kept pressuring the board.
Both Russia and Ukraine are reporting export paces more than half of last year's, but ample Black Sea supply is still outrunning that slowdown in the funds' eyes.
So what: soft-red basis has more room to widen if the funds keep leaning on the short side into harvest wrap-up.
Watch: Thursday's export inspections and any fresh Black Sea shipping headline.
🌾 HRW Wheat — 673.00¢, −18¢ (−2.60%) 🔴⬇️ $KE_F ( 0.0% )
The day's single biggest grain mover, outpacing even Chicago. Improving Southern Plains moisture, with scattered showers forecast across the growing region, took the drought premium out of hard-red.
Kansas City actually fell further than SRW today, so the HRW-SRW spread (673.00¢ minus 628.25¢ = 44.75¢) narrowed from where it sat Tuesday.
So what: a narrower spread trims some of the protein-premium cushion hard-red growers have been leaning on.
Watch: the next drought monitor update for the Plains and whether the moisture actually materializes.
🌾 HRS Wheat — 651.50¢, −10¼¢ (−1.55%) 🔴⬇️ $KW_F ( 0.0% )
The Minnie slid again in its usual thin, choppy trade, but today's close is notable: it landed right inside a downside zone longer-term chart-watchers flagged as support weeks ago.
Whether that zone holds or gives way is exactly the kind of call that belongs on a chart, not in this newsletter; see the Desk Line above.
So what: if you're hedging spring wheat, this is a level worth having an opinion on before tomorrow's open.
Watch: whether HRS holds here or breaks lower on the next session, and liquidity around the thin Minneapolis close.
🌱 Oats — 380.75¢, −4¢ (−1.04%) 🔴⬇️ $ZO_F ( 0.0% )
Thin, choppy trade again on some of the lightest volume on the board; oats simply followed the rest of the grain complex lower.
No fresh oats-specific news today, consistent with this market's usual script.
So what: not much new signal here for bin-space decisions beyond "the whole board was soft."
Watch: the Chicago/Prairie cash gap as post-harvest supply firms up.
🇨🇦 Canola — C$785.50, −C$8.40 (−1.06%) 🔴⬇️ $RS_F ( 0.0% )
Canola extended its slide, following the lead of vegetable oils lower as Chicago soyoil, European rapeseed, and Malaysian palm oil all fell together.
The loonie held steady, so this was a vegetable-oil and harvest-pressure story rather than a currency one; Manitoba's harvest is now 92% done.
So what: delivered bids have a little less cushion as new-crop supply keeps arriving.
Watch: the next AAFC supply/demand update and any fresh palm-oil export data.
🐮 Alberta Feed Barley — ~C$295/tonne delivered Lethbridge (carried, no fresh print this cycle) ➖
No new delivered-bid print this cycle; feedlot demand and the barley/corn import-substitution math haven't shifted enough to move this number on their own.
So what: ration costs on the feeding side are holding roughly where they've been for a couple of weeks.
Watch: the next weekly delivered-bid update and DDG competition from the U.S. side.
🛢️ WTI Crude — $97.15, −$0.67 (−0.68%) 🔴⬇️ $USO ( ▼ 0.5% )
A genuine whipsaw session. Crude climbed toward multi-month highs early on continued Strait of Hormuz tanker tension, then slid hard after Russia agreed to a new round of Ukraine talks.
A later report of U.S. embassy staff leaving Saudi Arabia clawed back some of the drop before the board settled modestly lower on the day.
So what: farm diesel costs didn't get the headline spike the intraday swing suggested; the settle tells the calmer story.
Watch: any further movement on the Russia-Ukraine talks and the next EIA inventory report.
🔥 Natural Gas — $2.790, −$0.173 (−5.84%) 🔴⬇️ $NG_F ( 0.0% )
Today's biggest mover on the board, and by a wide margin. Front-month gas broke decisively below $2.80 as weather forecasts trended further into mild territory, sapping heating-demand expectations right as the withdrawal season should be ramping up.
Trading volume has been thinning since late September, leaving the market more exposed to swings in the forecast.
This is the second straight session of sharp losses, extending a slide that's now shaved more than half a dollar off the front month in a week.
So what: a soft gas market is the one clear piece of good news on today's board for nitrogen fertilizer costs heading into next spring.
Watch: Thursday's EIA storage report and any further shift in the 10-to-15-day weather outlook.
🥇 Gold — $4,150.00, +$7.40 (+0.18%) 🟢⬆️ $GLD ( ▲ 0.34% )
Gold recovered from a midday dip to finish with a small gain, even as crude's spike toward $110 lifted yields and firmed up bets on a December Fed rate hike.
The Fed's October 27-28 meeting is the next big catalyst; markets widely expect a hold this month with a hike still priced for December.
So what: not a farm-economics driver directly, but a reminder the macro backdrop stays choppy heading into the Fed decision.
Watch: the October 27-28 FOMC meeting and any further Middle East headlines.
🥈 Silver — $57.710, −$0.290 (−0.50%) 🔴⬇️ $SLV ( ▲ 0.27% )
Silver gave back a slice of yesterday's gain, pulling the gold-silver ratio back out to roughly 72-to-1.
The move tracked the same rate-expectation pressure weighing on gold, without an industrial-demand offset today.
So what: ratio-watchers get another data point in a week that's been bouncing both directions.
Watch: the gold-silver ratio and COMEX inventory levels.
The Bottom Line
Biggest mover: Natural gas, down 5.84% and breaking below $2.80 on a mild weather outlook, its second straight sharp decline.
Cross-market driver: A whipsaw crude session, with Hormuz tension and Russia-Ukraine talks pulling WTI both ways, helped lift gold-pressuring yields while Plains moisture and fast harvest progress drove HRW and SRW wheat to the board's biggest grain losses.
Top thing to watch tomorrow: Thursday's EIA natural gas storage report and export sales numbers, plus whether HRS wheat holds the technical level it tested today.
