What The Daily Board is
The Daily Board is a weekday market brief for grain producers, traders and ag-business readers.
Each edition reports where 14 markets closed and why, then ties the move to what a farm actually pays: diesel, fertilizer, basis, and hedges.
The number always comes first, followed by the explanation.
Who writes it
Trent Klarenbach, founder and lead analyst at Klarenbach Research in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, writes and edits The Daily Board.
Trent covers Prairie grain markets and contributes analysis to Barchart.com.
Subscribers can find technical analysis and marketing plans in the Klarenbach Grain Report.
The 14 markets we cover
Every edition covers the same lineup, quoted in each market's native units and labelled with the contract month.
Grains and oilseeds: corn (ZC), soybeans (ZS), soybean meal (ZM), soybean oil (ZL), Chicago SRW wheat (ZW), Kansas City HRW wheat (KE), Minneapolis HRS wheat (MW) and oats (ZO).
Prairie crops: ICE canola (RS), quoted in Canadian dollars per tonne, and Alberta feed barley, a weekly delivered cash price in Canadian dollars per tonne.
Energy: WTI crude oil (CL) in US dollars per barrel and Henry Hub natural gas (NG) in US dollars per MMBtu.
Metals: gold (GC) and silver (SI) in US dollars per troy ounce.
Grains and oats are quoted in US cents per bushel, soybean meal in US dollars per short ton and soybean oil in US cents per pound. Canadian prices are never blended into US ones.
The commodity market glossary explains terms like basis, crush, and front month.
Where the prices come from
Primary source: the Barchart end-of-day report for each front-month contract, read from the dated email rather than a live quote page that can show stale numbers.
Cross-check: we check every price against at least one independent source, such as an exchange settlement, a closing-prices report from a farm news desk, or a market wire. If two sources disagree, the official exchange settlement wins.
Flags: a number that cannot be verified is marked with a dagger and reported as a direction only. We never publish a price seen only once.
Weekly series: Alberta feed barley and similar cash series update weekly, so the edition uses the latest release and says so.
Sources listed: each edition ends with a Sources Used section naming what was consulted that day.
How to read an edition
Each edition opens with a short read on the session, then The Board, a one-line-per-market price list.
The Read follows, with a short section on each market covering what drove it, a "So what" for the reader's bottom line and a "Watch" for the next catalyst.
The Bottom Line closes with the biggest mover, the main cross-market driver and what to watch next.
The full walkthrough is in How to Read The Daily Board.
What The Daily Board is not
The free edition explains what happened and why.
It does not give trade calls, price targets or hedge ratios.
Nothing here is investment advice or a recommendation to buy, sell or trade any security or commodity, so please do your own due diligence.
