Friday, October 23, 2026. Crude surged more than 3.8% for a second straight session as Gulf shipping attacks escalated, natural gas tumbled through its recent support, and gold and silver slid again even as the grain complex traded a quiet, mixed session heading into the weekend.

The Read
🌽 Corn — 456.00¢, −4½¢ (−0.98%) 🔴⬇️ $$CORN ( ▼ 0.56% ) $ZC_F
A quiet Friday with no fresh USDA print to lean on (Thursday's export sales already drove Thursday's move); corn simply gave back a little of that bounce.
The broader risk-off tone from this week's equity wobble and the crude spike's inflation implications kept buyers cautious.
So what: with South American planting still the next real catalyst, a quiet pullback like this isn't a signal to chase either way.
Watch: South American seeding pace and next week's crop progress numbers.
🫘 Soybeans — 1268.50¢, +3¾¢ (+0.30%) 🟢⬆️ $$SOYB ( ▲ 0.56% ) $ZS_F
The front-month roll moved beans from November into January today; Brownfield's November read (+3½¢) confirms the same firm tone on the old contract.
Thursday's blockbuster Chinese export booking (2.18 million tonnes) is still the story underpinning the complex into the new week.
So what: beans are the one corner of the grain board still getting a demand tailwind.
Watch: whether China keeps booking cargoes, and the Nov/Jan spread now that January is the active month.
🥣 Soybean Meal — $346.10, −$1.20 (−0.35%) 🔴⬇️ $ZM_F
Meal gave back ground for a second session as the crush (the margin a processor earns turning beans into meal and oil) tilted toward oil again.
No fresh export news moved the needle here today.
So what: feedlot ration costs are holding roughly steady.
Watch: the next crush report for whether oil keeps widening its lead.
🫒 Soybean Oil — 66.83¢, +0.09¢ (+0.13%) 🟢⬆️ $ZL_F
Oil ticked higher, tracking crude's spike on its usual tight leash to energy and biofuel demand, though the move was modest given how far crude ran.
With meal soft, oil carried the crush higher almost entirely on its own again.
So what: biodiesel economics firmed slightly on a day crude jumped hard.
Watch: whether oil keeps pace with crude if the Gulf risk premium holds into next week.
🌾 SRW Wheat — 625.00¢, +¼¢ (+0.04%) 🟢⬆️ $$WEAT ( ▼ 0.04% )
SRW essentially sat still into the weekend, a rounding-error move after a soft week for the global benchmark.
Fund positioning stays heavily short, and Black Sea supply remains the backdrop pressing on price.
So what: soft-red basis (the gap between your local cash bid and the futures price) has little fresh news to move it either way.
Watch: Monday's export inspections and any Black Sea headlines over the weekend.
🌾 HRW Wheat — 664.50¢, −1¼¢ (−0.19%) 🔴⬇️ $KE_F
HRW drifted lower again as improving Southern Plains moisture keeps chipping away at the drought premium that's been propping up hard-red.
The move was small, consistent with a generally quiet grain tape today.
So what: a fading drought premium is a tough combination with still-soft demand for hard-red growers.
Watch: the next drought monitor update.
🌾 HRS Wheat — 641.50¢, −¼¢ (−0.04%) 🔴⬇️ $KW_F
The Minnie held almost dead flat, sitting right around the downside level it tested yesterday in its usual thin, choppy trade.
No fresh spring-wheat news today; it's mostly tracking the rest of the wheat board.
So what: the level is holding for now, which matters if you're thinking about hedging spring wheat.
Watch: whether that level holds into next week or finally gives way.
🌱 Oats — 372.00¢, −4¼¢ (−1.13%) 🔴⬇️ $ZO_F
Oats led the grain complex's percentage losses today on some of the thinnest volume on the board, simply drifting with the broader tape.
No oats-specific news, consistent with this market's usual script.
So what: not much signal here beyond thin, directionless trade.
Watch: the Chicago/Prairie cash gap as post-harvest supply settles in.
🇨🇦 Canola — C$792.60, +C$1.30 (+0.16%) 🟢⬆️ $RS_F
Canola edged up with crude's advance and a firmer soybean oil print, with cash basis at Thunder Bay and Vancouver ticking up the same C$1.30 alongside the futures move.
The move was modest given how hard crude ran, suggesting the vegetable-oil complex isn't fully chasing the energy spike.
So what: a small extra cushion on delivered bids today, even with new-crop supply still arriving.
Watch: whether canola keeps tracking crude if the Gulf premium holds, and the next AAFC supply/demand update.
🐮 Alberta Feed Barley — ~C$295/tonne delivered Lethbridge ➖
So what: ration costs on the feeding side are holding roughly where they've been for weeks.
Watch: the next weekly delivered-bid update and DDG competition from the U.S. side.
🛢️ WTI Crude — $103.27, +$3.80 (+3.82%) 🟢⬆️ $$USO ( ▲ 4.32% )
Today's defining story, for a second straight day. Iran's IRGC Navy claimed it hit four tankers and that three more struck mines near the Strait of Hormuz, seven vessels in all by its own count; the claim is unconfirmed.
Houthi forces claimed fresh strikes on Saudi Arabia, air defenses intercepted drones over Riyadh and Medina, and Saudi Aramco evacuated its Dhahran headquarters as a precaution (no barrels lost; its Hormuz-bypass pipeline has reportedly ramped to 7 million barrels a day from 2 million). A larger-than-expected weekly U.S. crude draw added support.
So what: two days of a spike like this shows up at the pump and on the farm diesel bill fast, not in weeks.
Watch: confirmation or denial of the tanker claims and next week's Oct. 27-28 Fed meeting.
🔥 Natural Gas — $2.640, −$0.156 (−5.58%) 🔴⬇️ $NG_F
Gas broke through its recent $2.80-$2.96 support band, pressured by mild near-term weather forecasts and comfortable storage levels heading into the heart of fall.
The drop is a reminder that gas is trading its own weather-and-storage story, with no read-through at all from crude's geopolitical spike.
So what: a soft gas tape is a rare bit of relief on nitrogen fertilizer costs even as the diesel side of the ledger moves the other way.
Watch: next week's EIA storage report and any shift toward real cold in the outlook.
🥇 Gold — $4,007.90, −$52.50 (−1.29%) 🔴⬇️ $$GLD ( ▼ 0.65% )
Gold fell again as crude's spike revived December rate-hike bets (markets were pricing roughly 78% odds of another Fed hike), with the dollar index also firmer on the day.
The metal is on track for a weekly loss of more than 3%, even with Treasury yields easing earlier in the week.
So what: not a farm-economics driver directly, but another sign the macro backdrop is getting choppier heading into next week's Fed decision.
Watch: the Oct. 27-28 FOMC meeting and any tanker-claim confirmation.
🥈 Silver — $53.949, −$1.058 (−1.92%) 🔴⬇️ $$SLV ( ▼ 1.26% )
Silver fell alongside gold, with added pressure from industrial-demand and borrowing-cost concerns on the thinner, more speculative side of the metals complex.
The gold-silver ratio (how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold) widened again on the move.
So what: another data point for ratio-watchers after a volatile stretch in metals.
Watch: the ratio and next week's Fed decision.
The Bottom Line
Biggest mover: Natural gas, down 5.58% and the sharpest percentage move on the board, even as crude surged the opposite way.
Cross-market driver: Escalating Gulf shipping attacks sent WTI crude surging for a second day, reviving December rate-hike bets that pressured gold and silver, while grains mostly chopped sideways on a quiet, newsless Friday.
Top thing to watch: confirmation (or denial) of the tanker claims over the weekend, next week's EIA natural gas storage report, and the Fed's Oct. 27-28 meeting.
Track today's movers: WTI Crude, Natural Gas, Silver
